Majority of Rwandan Journalists Struggle Financially – Survey

A new survey has revealed growing financial challenges facing journalists in Rwanda, with the majority saying their salaries do not meet basic living needs.

According to the findings, 17.2% of journalists earn less than Rwf100,000 per month, while 15.1% earn between Rwf100,000 and Rwf199,999. Another 12.6% earn between Rwf200,000 and Rwf299,999, and 16% earn between Rwf300,000 and Rwf499,999.

Only 11.3% of respondents reported earning Rwf500,000 or more monthly, while 27.9% declined to disclose their income.

The report also shows that 43% of journalists said their salaries cover only a small portion of their basic needs, while 13% said their income does not meet basic needs at all. Just 2.7% said they earn enough to fully support themselves.
