Police Destroy Hundreds of Kilograms of Drugs in Southern Rwanda

Rwanda National Police on Thursday, May 21, 2026, destroyed large quantities of illegal drugs and illicit alcohol as part of an anti-crime campaign in Southern Province.

The exercise was conducted jointly by the police, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, and residents from the eight districts that make up the province.

Southern Province Police spokesperson, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, said the drugs were publicly destroyed to prevent their harmful effects on public health and security.

“This is proof that citizens now understand that security is a shared responsibility and that cooperation is key to maintaining it,” he said.

The destroyed substances included more than 480 kilograms of cannabis, over 400 liters of illicit brew known as Kanyanga, and more than 35 liters of another illegal alcohol called Igikwangari.

Police said the campaign aims to prevent crime before it happens and educate citizens about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
