African Countries Increasingly Turning to Nuclear Energy – Rwanda Official

A senior Rwandan official says more African countries are placing nuclear energy at the center of their medium- and long-term energy development plans.

Dr. Fidelis Rugigana made the remarks during the International Nuclear Energy Conference currently underway in Kigali from May 18, 2026.

According to Rugigana, transparency and effective governance are essential if Africa is to safely and successfully develop nuclear energy programs.

He highlighted Rwanda’s institutional structure, where the regulatory authority operates independently from the national nuclear energy agency.

“No institution, including government entities, interferes with our regulatory responsibilities,” he said.

Rugigana stressed that public participation is equally important, saying citizens must be included in discussions and implementation processes to ensure trust and success.
