FERWAFA and Kiyovu Sports Commemorate Victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi

FERWAFA joined Kiyovu Sports on Monday in a commemoration event honoring former players, supporters, and Rwandans killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event brought together football players, coaches, sports leaders, and club members, who were given lessons about the history leading to the genocide before laying flowers at a memorial site where more than 250,000 victims are buried.

Speaking during the ceremony, Shema Ngoga Fabrice stressed the importance of unity and collective responsibility in preventing genocide from ever happening again.

“We stand together with Kiyovu Sports and all Rwandans in remembering those who were killed. We firmly believe genocide should never happen again, and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that,” he said.

Ngoga revealed that his own uncle, who once served as a leader at Kiyovu Sports, was among those killed during the genocide. He also said his grandfather was believed to be one of the club’s founders.

FERWAFA further announced plans to promote genocide history education within sports institutions and work with relevant authorities to establish a memorial for people connected to sports who were killed in 1994.
