Couple Arrested in Gasabo District for Producing and Distributing Unregulated Liquor

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) operating in Zindiro Cell, Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, has arrested Nzamwita Aimé (38) and his wife Nyirarukundo Frotinée for allegedly producing and distributing unregulated alcoholic beverages (locally known as “Liquor”) to the public.

Arrest Operation and Attempt to Destroy Evidence

According to CIP Wellars Gahonzire, the Police Spokesperson for Kigali City, the couple was apprehended on Thursday, July 31, 2025, following a tip-off from concerned citizens and in collaboration with other security agencies.

During the arrest, Nzamwita was found at his residence. His wife, realizing that her husband had been detained, allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by setting fire to their bed and an internet router using Supanet fuel, intending to destroy incriminating materials.

“Police officers quickly intervened and began extinguishing the flames. They were supported by the Fire and Rescue Brigade (FBR), which managed to contain the fire,” CIP Gahonzire stated.

Unregulated Liquor and Property Damage

Upon a search of the premises, authorities discovered:

  • 624 bottles of illegal “Liquor”
  • 20 liters of raw alcohol stored in a plastic jerrycan
  • The illicit product was being sold under the fake brand name “One Sip Gin”

The fire caused substantial property damage. According to police reports:

  • The house was partially destroyed
  • Items worth approximately 2,500,000 Rwandan Francs (Frw) were damaged
  • Additional belongings inside the house valued at 5,820,000 Frw were lost

Suspects in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

The couple is currently being held at the Bumbogo Police Station and will be handed over to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for further investigation.

Authorities say the couple violated multiple laws, including producing food or drink unfit for human consumption, falsifying product labels, and endangering public health.

Police Warning on Illegal Alcohol Production

The Rwanda National Police has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the production and distribution of substandard alcoholic drinks, labeling such actions as a threat to public health.

“This is tantamount to poisoning the population,” CIP Gahonzire stressed.
“We will not tolerate such reckless behavior. These practices destroy lives and violate existing laws.”

The police urged the public to continue reporting suspicious or illegal activities in their communities.

Legal Implications

Under Rwandan Law, those found guilty of producing or distributing unsafe food or beverages can face severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment. Offenses such as forgery, public endangerment, and resisting law enforcement may lead to additional charges.

Conclusion

This case underscores the importance of public vigilance and the role of community members in maintaining public health and safety. The Rwanda National Police reiterates its commitment to protecting citizens from harmful substances and bringing offenders to justice.
