Political tensions escalated in Kenya after Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mahmoud alleged that supporters linked to Senator Edwin Sifuna could be armed ahead of a rally in Kakamega.
Mahmoud told reporters that intelligence suggested some individuals travelling from Nairobi might carry firearms. He also noted that police had not received formal communication about the rally scheduled in Amalemba.
The commander said officers remain ready to facilitate lawful gatherings but stressed that due process must be followed. He warned that police would act decisively against any breaches of the law.
The allegations come days after Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” convoy was reportedly stoned at Kona Mbaya trading centre.
In response, Sifuna has maintained that he will proceed with the rally, stating that he will not be intimidated into cancelling the event.
Security agencies say they are closely monitoring developments ahead of the planned gathering.
