The government of Rwanda has dismissed claims that social media monetization features have been launched in the country, describing a viral screenshot as inaccurate.
The clarification followed widespread online excitement, with many users believing monetization had already been enabled. In a statement, the Ministry of ICT urged the public to verify information through official channels.
The discussion around digital monetization gained traction at the National Umushyikirano Council, where musician Bruce Melodie highlighted the challenges faced by Rwandan creators who are unable to generate revenue from their content.
President Paul Kagame responded by seeking clarification on what conditions must be met for monetization programs to be activated locally.
ICT Minister Paula Ingabire said Rwanda has satisfied most technical and regulatory requirements but lacks sufficient advertising investment from businesses, which is a key condition set by platforms.
Authorities expressed optimism that increased private-sector engagement could help unlock the opportunity in the near future.
