Rwanda National Police (RNP), in collaboration with other security agencies, has arrested five suspects in Gicumbi District for allegedly engaging in criminal activities that threatened public safety, including theft, assault, and robbery.
The illegal activities were reportedly taking place around Gatuna trading center, near the border between Rwanda and Uganda.
Community Alert Leads to Timely Arrests
Residents of Rwankonjo Cell, Cyumba Sector, raised concerns about a group of men frequently seen loitering in the area without any formal employment. Locals alleged that these individuals would target unsuspecting people at night, robbing them of their belongings.
“These men had become a menace. They would ambush us on the road and steal our possessions,” said one resident.
“But after reporting them to the Police, swift action was taken, and they were arrested. We are relieved and hope justice will be served.”
Police Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Crime
Northern Province Police Spokesperson, IP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, confirmed the arrests and assured the public of continued efforts to maintain law and order.
“The safety of Rwandans is non-negotiable,” he stated.
“Anyone who attempts to compromise national security will be apprehended and prosecuted. We appreciate the cooperation of residents who continue to share timely and accurate information.”
He further urged the public not to remain silent when witnessing suspicious or criminal behavior, emphasizing that security is a collective responsibility. Law enforcement remains committed to working with citizens to prevent and respond to crimes.
