President Kagame Meets AU Health Commissioner, AMA Chief to Advance Africa’s Health Agenda

President Paul Kagame, in his capacity as the African Union’s Special Envoy for Health Financing and Investment, met with Ambassador Amma Twum-Amoah, AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development, and Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA), at Village Urugwiro in Kigali.

The discussions focused on the progress made toward making the AMA fully operational and on expanding collaboration to strengthen Africa’s healthcare infrastructure and systems.

With its headquarters in Kigali, the African Medicines Agency plays a vital role in promoting high standards of medicine regulation across the continent. It seeks to coordinate efforts to ensure that Africans have access to safe, effective, and affordable medical products.

President Kagame highlighted Rwanda’s continued leadership in public health, stressing that sustainable progress depends on investing national resources into domestic health financing rather than relying solely on external aid.

The meeting reflected a strong commitment to reinforcing partnerships between Rwanda and the African Union, aimed at improving healthcare delivery, promoting innovation, and advancing human development throughout Africa.
