Residents and youth in Kibangu Sector, Muhanga District, have joined forces to rebuild homes for families affected by natural disasters. The initiative was launched during the National Month of Volunteerism, with participants carrying out a special Umuganda to construct seven houses that are now nearing completion.

Speaking during the launch, Mayor Kayitare Jacqueline of Muhanga District said the project reflects the spirit of unity and resilience that defines Rwandans. She emphasized the importance of youth participation in national development and the need for families to nurture a culture of hard work among young people.
“This is a time to help the youth overcome idleness and adopt positive values. Families should teach their children to love work, because hard work is the foundation of national progress,” Kayitare said.
She added that the month also provides a platform for youth to learn about the country’s history, understand it critically, and resist misinformation.
Solange Kamanzi, the District Coordinator of Youth Volunteers, highlighted that their activities go beyond construction. The volunteers are also creating kitchen gardens, promoting school enrollment, encouraging road safety through the Gerayo Amahoro campaign, and mobilizing others to participate in community service.
“History teaches us that while some young people took part in destruction during the Genocide against the Tutsi, others were heroes who stopped it. We must follow the example of those who chose to build,” she said.
Beneficiaries thanked the volunteers for their support and pledged to work hard to improve their lives once their homes are completed. Local authorities also promised continued assistance to ensure sustainable development in the community.
