For communities in Rutsiro District, life is slowly returning to normal after last year’s devastating floods destroyed dozens of bridges. Ten of the 28 bridges washed away in 2023 have now been rebuilt, restoring vital connections between villages and neighboring districts.
The disaster, triggered by record rainfall in Mushubati Sector, left residents cut off from markets, schools, and essential services. Many were forced to carry food and supplies on foot after trucks could no longer access their villages.
Vice Mayor Emmanuel Uwizeyimana explained that while smaller community paths were quickly restored through umuganda (community work), the district and partners invested 882 million francs to rebuild 10 major bridges. By mid-2026, officials expect only 11 bridges to remain under construction.
One of the most celebrated achievements is the reopening of the Barahoga Bridge in Mukura Sector. “Before this bridge was rebuilt, we were in isolation,” said resident Nsabimana Donat. “Now vehicles can bring food for students, transport our farm produce, and carry building materials again. Our daily struggles have eased.”
