For millions in low- and middle-income countries, hope in the fight against HIV has taken a new turn. it was announced that Lenacapavir — a drug proven to provide nearly 100% protection from HIV — will now be available for $40 per person annually.
The development is backed by Unitaid, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and Wits RHI. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton described the decision as “a historic shift that will make prevention easier for patients and health workers alike.”
Rwanda’s Health Minister, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, said the lower price could transform Africa’s HIV response. Lenacapavir, taken just twice a year, is expected to dramatically cut new infections — currently affecting 1.3 million people every year.
