In a move to promote environmental conservation and improve household welfare, 20 families from Byimana Sector in Ruhango District, Rwanda, have received 3,000-liter water tanks and energy-saving stoves. The initiative is expected to ease the burden of daily chores, reduce firewood consumption, and protect the environment.
Relief for Women and Households
Many of the beneficiaries had previously struggled to access clean water and relied heavily on firewood for cooking, which consumed both time and physical effort — especially for women.
Theogene Nyirinkindi, one of the recipients, shared:
“These tanks will help us water our crops and provide water for our animals. The new stoves also use less firewood, which is a big relief.”
Violette Ayinkamiye, a mother, said:
“Fetching water and cooking with traditional stoves was exhausting. These tools are a game-changer for me as a woman. My workload at home will reduce significantly.”
Each eco-stove cuts firewood use by up to 80%, making cooking faster and more sustainable.
Who Made This Possible?
The support was provided through the ‘Protect the Environment, Protect Your Life’ project, spearheaded by Réseau des Femmes in partnership with ACORD Rwanda.
Fortiné Twiyubahe, a representative from ACORD Rwanda, emphasized:
“These families used to struggle with collecting firewood and cooking for long hours. Providing these tools directly addresses their daily challenges and promotes efficient household work.”
Xaverine Uwimana, Director of Réseau des Femmes, noted:
“The rainwater tanks don’t just provide clean water — they prevent soil erosion by harvesting rainwater, and they help promote sanitation and hygiene.”
Government Applauds the Effort
Sarah Delphine Mukabadege, Ruhango District’s Partnership Coordinator, thanked the NGOs, highlighting that the initiative solves core community challenges:
“This project is not only providing materials — it’s also changing mindsets. It reduces conflict within families, many of which were caused by ignorance and resource scarcity.”
Project Impact
The ‘Protect the Environment, Protect Your Life’ initiative currently supports 20 families across two villages in Byimana Sector. It focuses on:
- Gender equality and family harmony
- Environmental protection
- Water access and sanitation
- Prevention of gender-based violence
The project has become a model for integrated community development, showing how small-scale interventions can significantly transform lives.
