Former Rwandan Minister and Ambassador Protais Mitali Dies in Belgium After Illness

Kigali, Rwanda — Protais Mitali, a seasoned Rwandan politician, former cabinet minister, and ambassador, has died in Belgium after a short illness. His death has been confirmed by sources close to the family and has sparked condolences across the political spectrum in Rwanda.

Mitali held several influential government positions over the course of his political career. He notably served as Rwanda’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture, Minister of Commerce, Industry, Investment Promotion, Tourism, and Cooperatives, and also held a seat in Parliament. Known for his administrative skill and calm demeanor, he played a vital role in post-genocide nation-building efforts, particularly in economic and youth development sectors.

In 2015, Mitali was appointed as Rwanda’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, where he also represented Rwanda at the African Union and other key regional institutions headquartered in Addis Ababa. His diplomatic role further strengthened Rwanda’s influence in regional policy discussions and pan-African cooperation.

In addition to his government service, Mitali was a long-serving president of the Liberal Party of Rwanda (Parti Liberal – PL). Under his leadership, the party participated in Rwanda’s post-conflict democratic processes and held ministerial positions in coalition governments. He resigned from the party leadership in 2015, shortly after concluding his ambassadorial duties.

Despite stepping back from the political spotlight in recent years, Mitali remained a respected figure among Rwanda’s political elite and is remembered for his contribution to the country’s reconstruction and modernization.

The Rwandan government has yet to issue an official statement regarding his passing. Funeral arrangements are expected to be coordinated in consultation with the family and diplomatic missions abroad.

Mourners have taken to social media and political platforms to express their sorrow, praising Mitali’s patriotism, humility, and commitment to public service.
