Rutsiro District, Rwanda<\/strong> \u2013 Three staff members of SACCO Indashyikirwa Murunda<\/strong> have been arrested and are currently detained at the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) Gihango Station<\/strong> on suspicion of embezzling over RWF 10 million<\/strong> from member accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those under investigation include the treasurer Barera Remy<\/strong>, the loan officer Uwamahoro B\u00e9atrice<\/strong>, and the cashier Iradukunda Daphrose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprise Audit Led to Arrests<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to a SACCO employee who spoke to Imvaho Nshya<\/em>, the arrests followed a surprise audit conducted by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR)<\/strong>. BNR officials reportedly arrived at the Murunda branch unexpectedly in the afternoon and began an in-depth financial review. Later that evening, RIB officers arrived and took the three staff members into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were working as usual around 11 a.m. when BNR officials arrived. After several hours of reviewing records, RIB came and arrested the three staff members. We don’t know much beyond that for now \u2014 our work continues as normal,\u201d<\/em> the source said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Members React with Concern and Uncertainty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One SACCO member told Imvaho Nshya<\/em> that while they had heard about the arrests, no official communication had yet been given:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing was mentioned about embezzlement during the last general assembly. But there had been rumors of unclear financial practices. We\u2019re waiting for official information from the investigation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rutsiro District Authorities Confirm Arrests<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rutsiro District Mayor, Kayitesi Dative<\/strong>, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects are being investigated for allegedly withdrawing funds from member accounts and misappropriating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were arrested following a BNR audit that revealed potential embezzlement of around RWF 10 million. The matter is under investigation, and further details will be shared as findings emerge,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Kayitesi urged cooperative members to closely monitor the management of their finances<\/strong>, verify account activity regularly, and report any suspicious transactions to authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe assure SACCO members that their assets are being protected, and this investigation is part of that commitment. If those arrested are found guilty, they will be held accountable and required to return the funds. If found innocent, due process will be followed,\u201d<\/em> she added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She emphasized that SACCO Indashyikirwa continues to operate normally and that no member should panic or fear losing their savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
