The Government of Uganda<\/strong> has signed a $150 million loan agreement<\/strong> with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA)<\/strong>, equivalent to over UGX 537 billion<\/strong>. The funding aims to accelerate private sector development and strengthen inclusive economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement was signed on July 31, 2025<\/strong>, in Kigali, Rwanda<\/strong>, during the Annual General Meeting of the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank (TDB Group)<\/strong>. The event also marked TDB\u2019s 40th anniversary<\/strong> of supporting Africa\u2019s development financing efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TDB meeting in Kigali attracted more than 300 participants<\/strong>, including investors, policymakers, and decision-makers from across Eastern and Southern Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breakdown of the $150 Million Loan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The agreement was officially signed by Abdullah ALMUSABEEH<\/strong>, President of BADEA, and Matia Kasaija<\/strong>, Uganda\u2019s Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • $100 million<\/strong> will be channeled through BADEA\u2019s private sector lending program<\/strong>, targeting key sectors such as:\n
      \n
    • Agro-processing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Infrastructure<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Manufacturing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Healthcare<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Education<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The remaining $50 million<\/strong> will support Uganda\u2019s public sector<\/strong>, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in:\n
        \n
      • Agriculture<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Value addition<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Industry<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Educational and health infrastructure<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        This loan is in line with BADEA\u2019s long-term strategy dubbed \u201cBADEA 2030\u201d<\/strong>, which focuses on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Empowering the private sector<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Supporting trade<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Financing small and medium enterprises (SMEs)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Promoting inclusive economic development<\/strong> in Africa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Officials Commend the Strategic Partnership<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Dr. Patricia Adongo Ojangole<\/strong>, CEO of the Uganda Development Bank (UDB), praised both the Government of Uganda and BADEA for their commitment to sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \u201cWe are proud to partner with the Government of Uganda and BADEA in advancing the private sector through well-structured investments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

          BADEA President Abdullah ALMUSABEEH<\/strong> highlighted the importance of collaboration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \u201cToday\u2019s loan agreement with Uganda is a great example of how countries can utilize diverse financing mechanisms to stimulate private sector development and national economic goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

          Uganda\u2019s Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija<\/strong>, expressed optimism about the growing partnership:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
